Maintaining your super is the lifelong challenge after finding it.
We’ll never know if Dr. King would have retired from advocacy had lived to senior citizenship.
Today’s creative activist juggles motivational; financial and results-oriented dilemmas that can mercilessly exstinguish ones super.
My approach is assessing where I’m at in terms of zeal and resources and operate within those parameters.
I’ve embedded the real life superhero ( RLSH )/extreme altruist ( X ALT ) persona into everyday life.
Most folks here call me ” Black “; short for my ” Capt. Black ” brand name. It gained some local noteriety when I became coordinator for Occupy NOLA’s Community Patrol shortly before our well-publicized eviction from Duncan Plaza across from New Orleans City Hall.
The resulting media exposure further introduced the RLSH/X ALT as participant in ongoing major news as opposed to the occasional special interest piece.
Maintaining my super means further embedding creative activism in our daily lives as a norm- not an exception.

Hurricane Isaac is seen churning in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Louisiana in this NASA handout satellite image taken on August 28, 2012. REUTERS/NASA Goddard MODIS Rapid Response/Handout (UNITED STATES - Tags: ENVIRONMENT) FOR EDITORIAL USE ONLY. NOT FOR SALE FOR MARKETING OR ADVERTISING CAMPAIGNSHurricane Isaac spared New Orleans biblical floods which befell neighboring parishes.
That’s not to say we were spared entirely.

Most working class New Orleanians have been without power for five days. The same for jobs- many of which have been closed due to the storm.

While her buildings remain intact New Orleans has a number of under-employed; un- employed and homeless people without resources. The fact that Mayor Landrieu nor Governor Jindal uttered a word nor floated one press release about this quiet crisis speaks volumes.
One can hope that Isaac inspired earlier-than usual September food stamp and cash benefit allotments aren’t the only state response to this matter.
What about those without work or entitlements- not to mention pre-Isaac shelter?

Regarding the city of New Orleans, a plan for sheltering the homeless during Isaac wasn’t announced to my knowledge.
Nor tweeted.
Nor blogged.
Not even mentioned off-the-record to the media pool.
It seems our mayor doesn’t recognize the working poor nor homeless as worthy of official notice.
Therefore liked stunned soldiers stumbling from bomb shelters after an air raid they are left to fend for themselves. left hanging by their municipal government.
Has so much changed since Katrina seven years ago?

( NEW ORLEANS Federal Court House ):
FULL DISCLOSURE: I’m a police supporter NOT a cop hater who loves making them look bad! In New Orleans they’re able to do that without outside help too often.
The Court Security Officers ( CSOs ) are mostly White retired police officers on contract through a private security company to the US Marshals Service, who deputizes them as Special Deputy US Marshals to man the entrance check point and secure court rooms as a supplement to deputy marshals.
I’m cool with the  concept. Gives ex-cops a chance to do what they love in defense of the federal bench. Thumbs up for the concept!
What I DON’T like is the consistently rude treatment I and other Black citizens recieve upon entry to the federal courthouse, funded by our tax dollars as well as those of sisters and brothers of all colors. Also, the deputy US Marshals haven’t mistreated me or others- only this group!
Today ( 8/20/12 ) was no exception.
Curt snapped instructions were issued to myself and my companion, a high school teacher/education advocate and we commented upon how we were made to feel like convicts being processed. I’ve gone through before for wearing my Muslim head garb- only worse!!!
These men make it plain they don’t like Black people and treat large groups of us like gang members being detained ne masse!
Inside the court room while parties made presentations CSOs spared no opportunity to confront Black onlookers for such “capital” offenses as briefly turning around to whisper or even having an elbow on the back of the bench???
Each time they walked by me contempt was written on their wrinkled faces. Going there always reminds me of hateful Savannah police officers I encountered decades ago as I walked while Black.
The icing on the cake was when a fire alarm sounded during the US Justice Department presentation.
After confirmation the court house was evacuated.
Everyone gathered in the court yard in plain view of court security. When the all clear was given another ” Mississippi Burning ” moment happened: Black onlookers were subjected to the FULL search process while Whites walked back in without being stopped???
I refused to go through with this blatant racial profiling and left.
Is THIS what we pay our taxes for, classic 60s style Dem Crow discrimination in this Democrat controlled city within a facility policed by a Democrat controlled Justice Department?
More over, how much ” justice ” can Black New Orleanians expect from this Administration’s feds if we can’t even be treated equally at the federal court house entrance???
I support good cops- NOT bad policy.
This is the  WORST policy I’ve seen and coming from Georgia that’s saying ALOT!!!

I will call 911 on you on the low to preserve discreet information gathering or directly act if the situation is too hot to wait for police to arrive.

This is the new Black male citizenship paradigm I  ( and others ) practice and promote. It’s the antidote to thug addiction
intravenouslypumped into brothers minds by adults and (un) popular culture. I know jails are overcrowded but so are morgues with chocolate klansmen’s only gift tot he community!

My contribution to our embattled community is a brother they can trust to advise them on safety and the long hard grind called seeking success without being a criminal.

When it comes to glacial police/community relations here in New Orleans and nationally the logical question is, ”  can brothers who are against crime help NOPD? “

” Yes ” in theory.

” Maybe ” in application.

Black men commit most of our street crime.  Reasonable observers would gather that uniting police and Black men opposing street crime is a no-brainer.

Not quite.

I have relationships with officers as do other anti crime brothers. Such scattered informal associations aside there is no formal coalition specifically uniting Black men with the police ( my Brothers & Badges Together model comes to mind, hint hint lol ).

Again, most New Orleans street crime is a majority Black male affair. Getting Black men and cops on the same team isn’t a ” racist ” response- it’s realist.

Either we as a society see Black men as more than suspects ( unless employed by law enforcement agencies, etc ) or we don’t.

Keeping anti crime brothers at arms length makes them wonder if liberal accusations about police being eternally biased are true?

I’d like to see Black male/police relations evolve to resemble a real world version of what Adam West’s Batman enjoyed on his famed TV show.

It’s a looong shot but worth the work I and others in this chocolate Klansmen era are making because there is no other decent choice!

All we have is the public safety miracle of all time waiting in the wings if we pull this off!
Surprised smile

Wasted away again in margaritaville

( NEW ORLEANS ) President Barack Obama will be here July 25th to address the National Urban League conference and have a campaign fund raiser at the famed  House of Blues.

I suggest he donate left over food from this fundraiser as a tangible way to touch desperate lives beyond distant policy making and social service delivery.
The CBD area where this will be held is quite a study in stark contrasts: people asleep on the sidewalk; begging food money in front of fast food places and asleep in doorways of closed businesses at night.
I call this ” micro-good. ” Whatever meals this provides won’t end New Orleans hunger forever. That’s something we must do whenever our hearts and political will reach that zenith.
One more unsolicited request: have the President give out some of the food. This one act will say more about his stance on combating poverty than all the budget items argued in Congress.
Mr President, this one proposed act of micro-good could set a presidential precedent for generations!
As my late grandmother and Obama supporter used to say on the eve of great events, ” This is the day the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it! ”
NOTE: If you think this is a good idea suggest it to the Obama reelection campaign:

I’m a creative activist using a superhero name ( ” Capt Black ” ) while promoting creative crime prevention; homeless outreach and political advocacy.  My real name isn’t secret ( it’s Nadra Enzi ) and my tactics don’t include even the semblance of vigilantism.2012 marks my fourth year affiliated with this community and I have marveled at its growth. The New York Initiative, a group of creative activists more along my lines ( costume-optional; community policing focused ) invited me to lead a New Orleans branch. This invitation created the New Orleans Initiative which began operations last weekend. We’re not trying to mkake headlines but we are trying to make a difference.” Real life superheroes ( RLSH ) as the media calls us have been the topic of drama; debacles and even documentaries. The city of Seattle has eclipsed even New York as the real life ” Gotham City ” or ” Metropolis. “
Seattle is home to Earth’s best known RLSH, Phoenix Jones, recently unmasked as mixed martial artist Benjamin Fedor. It also has a rising star ” real life supervillain ( RLSV ) “/satirist called Rex Velvet, whose wit and production skills are impressive.
At issue is the debate about whether ” real life superheroes ” , especially those actively performing citizens arrests, should even exist? Jones and Velvet represent the poles between which this debate swings.
For boring activists like me it’s quite a show.
Rex Velvet and other RLSVs aren’t actual criminals who’ve gone comic book on society. They seem to be social critics concerned with RLSH potential to advocate vigilantism and undermine the  police. These are legitimate concerns to be sure and these creative commentators have made such critiques a brand.
Sympathetic ” Real life supervillains ” advise RLSH not to carry deadly weapons; doff costumes and stay within the letter of the law. Unsympathetic ones demand the abolition of ” real life superheroes ” in the name of supporting the police. If anything RLSVs resemble outraged civic leagues more than a legion of doom.
Phoenix Jones represents the full contact wing of the ” real life superhero ” movement. Media coverage and Jones’ own chest camera capture he and his Rain City Superhero Movement team breaking up fights and restraining suspects.
Some RLSH don’t actually attempt to fight crime. Others do and include charitable outreach while making their rounds. My opinion on the debate is challenging convention gets more people involved to helping society.
My only caveat is making sure stretching reality doesn’t extend into delusion or worse. In that regard ” real life supervillains ” and I agree. People who really think they’re really ” superheroes ” or ” supervillains ” could be a problem.
I hope the middle ground between Rex Velvet and Phoenix Jones, people inventively assisting and commenting on today’s problems, would get as much air time.
The ” real life superhero ” debate is really a much needed new wrinkle the age old one about the limits of civic responsibility- especially during trying times when terrorism and a global recession beat down folks spirits.
If people want to call themselves superheroes or supervillains and aren’t hurting anyone I say more power to them.
Those causing harm however aren’t doing this debate nor themselves any good.

Lately Occupy Wall St. affiliates and related movements
have had angry liberal White men accused of plotting to blow up bridges and even firebomb the President’s Chicago Campaign headquarters.
” Angry White men! ” is a phrase usually associated with conservatives and Far right hate groups.
Fairness dictates asking are these cases on the Far Left isolated or symptoms of something more sinister… and widespread?
A progressive activist friend called me today with the same concern. He doesn’t want to associate with anyone preaching violence in any way, shape or form. As a Free Security! activist alternatives to criminal use of force are my specialty.
Black men know only too well that our words can be spun to whip millions of frightened White folks into a politically useful frenzy. The same holds true for angry liberal White men. Images of long haired anarchists terrify Mainstream ( i.e White ) America to its core.
From a security perspective please consider anarchists don’t look ” suspicious ” like, say, Arabs  or Black folks  They blend in with the general populace and thus don’t raise threat flags unless they go out of their way to call attention to themselves. Akin to demonic possession being Anarchist While White causes policy makers; homeland security and police officials sleepless nights.
That’s why a White man who calls himself an anarchist makes the alphabet soup more nervous than a dozen brothers holding Black Power theater at a press conference somewhere. Unseen; unsuspected, Anarchists While White can be anywhere; at any time and are impervious to the usual ( sometimes bias driven ) methods of identifying security threats.
Angry liberal White men are a thorn in the side of a Democratic president seeking to hold the center so he can win another four years. More press on Far Left political criminals could mean more reasons for White Independents to vote for a candidate with a more stable base.
But, raging at the machine is a young man’s birth right. Becoming criminals abusing legitimate causes isn’t being a protester- it’s being a predator! Populist activists should keep that thought firmly in mind in coming days. If the system you critique is so wrong and heavy handed you should be the last ones using violence as political expression.
Had the Chicago NATO Summit plotters been successful in fire bombing the President’s Campaign Headquarters and Mayor Emanuel’s home their only accomplishment would have been crossing the aisle to join ranks with civil rights era church bombers; abortion clinic targeters, etc to name a few felons.
Notice bombing people as a sick form of protest isn’t Far Right or Far Left- it’s just wrong!
Angry White liberal males might be on the rise at precisely the time when such rage is better spent registering voters; peacefully protesting and lobbying decision makers. They’re free to choose criminal acts but should understand they’re on their own if they do.
Nobody has the right to hurt people in the name of so-called political expression.
Angry liberal White men who do so are no better than Angry Conservative ones they scapegoat!
FULL DISCLOSURE: My Free Security! activism led me to become involved with Occupy NOLA here in New Orleans. I addressed safety and police liaison issues with this overwhelmingly non-violent group of reformers. They don’t riot; they try to reform society.
