ANGRY LIBERAL WHITE MEN ON THE RISE? ASKS CAPT BLACK

Lately Occupy Wall St. affiliates and related movements have had angry liberal White men accused of plotting to blow up bridges and even firebomb the President’s Chicago Campaign headquarters.
” Angry White men! ” is a phrase usually associated with conservatives and Far right hate groups.
Fairness dictates asking are these cases on the Far Left isolated or symptoms of something more sinister… and widespread?
A progressive activist friend called me today with the same concern. He doesn’t want to associate with anyone preaching violence in any way, shape or form. As a Free Security! activist alternatives to criminal use of force are my specialty.
Black men know only too well that our words can be spun to whip millions of frightened White folks into a politically useful frenzy. The same holds true for angry liberal White men. Images of long haired anarchists terrify Mainstream ( i.e White ) America to its core.
From a security perspective please consider anarchists don’t look ” suspicious ” like, say, Arabs or Black folks They blend in with the general populace and thus don’t raise threat flags unless they go out of their way to call attention to themselves. Akin to demonic possession being Anarchist While White causes policy makers; homeland security and police officials sleepless nights.
That’s why a White man who calls himself an anarchist makes the alphabet soup more nervous than a dozen brothers holding Black Power theater at a press conference somewhere. Unseen; unsuspected, Anarchists While White can be anywhere; at any time and are impervious to the usual ( sometimes bias driven ) methods of identifying security threats.
Angry liberal White men are a thorn in the side of a Democratic president seeking to hold the center so he can win another four years. More press on Far Left political criminals could mean more reasons for White Independents to vote for a candidate with a more stable base.
But, raging at the machine is a young man’s birth right. Becoming criminals abusing legitimate causes isn’t being a protester- it’s being a predator! Populist activists should keep that thought firmly in mind in coming days. If the system you critique is so wrong and heavy handed you should be the last ones using violence as political expression.
Had the Chicago NATO Summit plotters been successful in fire bombing the President’s Campaign Headquarters and Mayor Emanuel’s home their only accomplishment would have been crossing the aisle to join ranks with civil rights era church bombers; abortion clinic targeters, etc to name a few felons.
Notice bombing people as a sick form of protest isn’t Far Right or Far Left- it’s just wrong!
Angry White liberal males might be on the rise at precisely the time when such rage is better spent registering voters; peacefully protesting and lobbying decision makers. They’re free to choose criminal acts but should understand they’re on their own if they do.
Nobody has the right to hurt people in the name of so-called political expression.
Angry liberal White men who do so are no better than Angry Conservative ones they scapegoat!
FULL DISCLOSURE: My Free Security! activism led me to become involved with Occupy NOLA here in New Orleans. I addressed safety and police liaison issues with this overwhelmingly non-violent group of reformers. They don’t riot; they try to reform society.

Yes they certainly cause more harm to their cause than good. Typically as with the young angry black protestors of the 60’s, the media always focuses on the violent extremists to give the impression, either deliberately or just for ratings I don’t know which, that the extremists are the norm. Which we all know that they are not. I myself am, while no longer a young man at 57, am still an angry white liberal who detests the corruption in all of our political landscape, but I express it at the voting booth. When will people learn that violence only begets more violence? Thanks for this blog as always Captain Black. As usual I completely agree with what you are saying. My main worry now politically is that the media, mostly owned by arch conservative Rupert Murdock, will succeed in brainwashing the masses through is talk radio mouthpieces like Limbaugh and Beck or Fox TV news, so much so that our President will not get re-elected. One more super-rich conservative Republican in office right now might just finish off this country and push us into the Great Depression II which was very nearly caused by the Bush/Cheney years. But whatever happens violence is never the answer people. You only make all liberals look bad when you act out like this. Violent liberals (which is in itself an oxymoron) could be just the propoganda tool the ultra right needs to unseat our President in November. I pray that does not occur for everyone’s sake.

there is a trend forming in the RLSH community to look at “anarchists” as evil. I hate to have to tell you this but you are falling into a trap. the alphabet soup is scared of anarchists not because they can blend in but rather because they refuse to. today there are many who claim to be anarchists and are not, this is almost as big a problem, but lets look at the real anarchists in history. today we have an 8 hour work day that is losing it’s meaning. the 8 hour day was not meant just as a time and a half turning point but rather was meant to stop people being overworked and underpaid. anarchist union men and women in the I.W.W. fought long and hard to make a 40 hour work week pay enough to take care of your family. they fought for minimum wage for unskilled labor (prior to this unskilled labor was paid a fraction of a living wage) and the fought for safer work enviroments. todays big unions like the AFL-CIO never fought to gain the workers anything, they came around to steal the thunder the anarchists had built by working with the people. the I.W.W. was the only union willing to work with women, immigrants, retail workers, migratory labor, and other “undesirable” workers. but these were the ones who needed unions the most. those who could be replaced at a moments notice. anarchists throughout time have stood up for the underdog, from famous anarchists like hellen keller, joe hill, emma goldman, and man ray, to the unknown anarchists behind the ferrer schools, the state of rhode island, catalonia, freetown christiana, and many other things that we never get to hear about in this day. around the world may day is celebrated as international working peoples day because of the anarchists who were executed for getting the workers in chicago to go on strike demanding a 8 hour work day. that very same incident, the haymarket massacre, where a pinkerton threw a bomb into a crowed of striking workers and caused the chicago police to fire on the crowed, is where the false image of the bomb throwing anarchist comes from. today, thanks partly to johnny rotten, punkers around the world see that false image used to discredit anarchists and jump at it because they are angry (rightly so) at the system and, having never studied anarchism think it means chaos. anarchism is about self governance, educating the masses, making things like presidents and police obsolete so we can get rid of them, but if we want to get rid of the police we must police ourselves. I find many RLSH’s to be very anarchistic in nature and seeing you guys attack “anarchist” ideals because you do not understand them (mostly because of mass media lies and real anarchists are afraid of being shot for speaking out, see brad wills, sacco and vanzetti, joe hill, and others) shows how far we have come and that no one was listening anytime someone said “those who do not remember the past are doomed to repeat it.” please, look at the far left as you would look at any other group, there are good people, trouble makers, and many who fall in the middle, same as any police force, government, far right group, center of the road group, or any time any group or people exists.
