GRAND DAD: RLSH.

It’s small wonder I admire big, larger-than-life men like Paul Robeson and Teddy Roosevelt. After all, I was raised by one!
Earl Winthrop DeVeaux ( hereafter ” Grand Dad ” ) was my version of Clark Savage, Sr., the father and trainer of pulp icon Doc Savage. He raised me with a moral code reminiscent of the Knights of The Round Table and his beloved Prince Hall Masonic Lodge.
Grand Dad wasn’t a Bible thumper. He said his prayers every night before going to bed but didn’t demagogue about it. He was a strong moderate who preached intellectual curiosity and respect for diversity.
He had a great sense of humor and ability to walk in many worlds: farmer; inner city resident; first college graduate in his family; public school teacher; college educator; the list stretched on and on.
His love of heroic fiction obviously rubbed off on me. Stories about reading first editions of classics like the Shadow; Doc Savage; the Avenger; Superman; Batman and others just fueled my raging interest in these genres. Whether it was just entertainment for him, it was an activist blue print for me!
Grand Dad ( and notably Marvel Comics founder Stan Lee ) made me believe a dreamer from midtown Savannah, GA. could stand up for the little man and be a knight, even without the shining armor. All the negatives ( Jim Crow; the Depression; a world war/two police actions and crack’s attack on the Hood ) didn’t diminish his belief in a life fantastic.
Telling me it was okay to dream and chase those dreams is why Grand Dad is a real life superhero to me!

Super Rights

As a newly minted super rights activist ( among endless other things ) I think we have a God ( or Intelligent Design ) given right to become MORE than what resumes or low expectations dictate.
Constitutional scholars and mystics may argue whether there is an inherent right to be ” super ” but that’s what I’m strongly suggesting.
Super rights are promoted from sources as divergent as ecstatic religion and sober secularism.
From holy books; philosophy, psychology and every field there’s a clarion call to be super stated in various ways.
American comic book and pulp novel fiction recently joined these sources inspiring us to be more. They even popularized the term ” super ” and mainstreamed the concept in sensationalized fashion.
Anyone accomplishing something to an accompaniment of nay sayers performs a super rights act.
Super rights are the hidden subtext underwriting every great social movement against limitation and prejudice.
Overcoming all the negative ” isms ” ( Racism; sexism; homophobia; Islamo-phobia, xenophobia, etc. ) is classic super rights activism in action.
Names like Ghandi; King; Malcolm X; Paul Robeson; Howard Thurman; Theodore Roosevelt; Frederick Neitzsche; Abraham Maslow; Deepak Chopra, Adeeb Shabazz and numerous others are diverse proponents of what I call super rights.
Without some inner drive to exceed where else does great achievement spring?
Human beings may be beaten down or conned into performing beneath their potential but the drive toward super rights is an unbreakable part of us.
More importantly everyone defines what his/her expressed super right will be.
For some it’s joining what the media calls the real life superhero ( RLSH ) Movement. Others choose a desired profession. Some opt to attempt a long dreamed feat.
Super rights have as many applications as there are minds to envision them.
Celebrities clearly made this choice as have exceptional folks not in the public eye.
My question to you is simple: have you decided to exercise your super rights today?
The right to be super is one well worth life long study and effort. So much internal insecurity and suffering can be alleviated once people use this very unconventional human right.
Super rights activism is at the heart of any movement for freedom and justice.
What are we waiting for?!!!!!!!!

The “Superhero” Soluton

Capt.-Black-Headshot.I promote the “superhero” solution to persistent problems like crime, hunger and hopelessness.
Please purge capes and cowls from fiction out of your minds. That’s not necessarily what I’m talking about.
By “superhero” I also don’t exclusively mean the real life superhero ( RLSH ) Movement’s activists and crime fighters. This term easily incorporates epic figures like Paul Robeson, Teddy Roosevelt and others from history.
Recent additions include Welsey Autrey, New York’s Subway Hero; Duane ” Action ” Jackson and Lance Orton, the vigilant vendors who foiled this years Time Square bombing attempt.
People famous and anonymous can impact others in phenomenal ways. The “superhero” solution advocates phenomenal impact as a way of life. A public that exercises such imagination is a safer, more compassionate one.
The more lives you touch positively the more likely you are to continue in this vein. This solution becomes ingrained behavior and eventually accepted cultural practice.
We’ve accepted virtual reality on the internet. It’s high time everyday reality was seen as susceptible to good intention and consistency. Especially with an oppressive economy and spreading despair we have to increasingly use the “superhero” solution or risk becoming overwhelmed. Benevolence and effort are what drive this solution by creating good where there may have been none.
It starts with understanding you’re bigger than apathy or problems before you. inspiration can be found in fact and fiction. Religious texts also serve this purpose. Whatever the source, understanding you’re superior to negatives around you is step one.
The next step is acting on this realization on a regular basis. The “superhero” solution isn’t a one-time quick fix. It’s a lifelong approach limited by imagination and effort.
We can imagine ourselves weak and powerless. We can also imagine ourselves strong and powerful. Too many entomb themselves in limited thoughts and misery. Our goal is to take the special few not doing so and turn them into the majority in society.
That’s the essence of the “superhero” solution.
Sources of “superhero” inspiration are: major network; talk show and publication home pages ( CNN and Parade Magazine come to mind ) and organization websites including: the Congressional Medal of Honor Society and the Carnegie Hero Commission.
This is not an exhaustive list and can stretch to infinity. Just like our ability to use the “superhero” solution.
