Go Skate Boarding Day 2011 Video.

Talk about stereotype busters!!!!! Talked today on New Orleans Canal Street to a young man named Patrick whom I consider the dean of downtown Black skateboarders.
I asked him did he know tomorrow ( June, 21st, 2011 ) was Go Skateboarding Day and his response was yes and that he will be videotaping it. From there a great conversation developed.

It’s become common place to see them noisily zooming along in that area. When I was their age, Skateboarding was a White, California or suburban thing to do.
Fast forward to the early 21st Century and young side walk surfers from the inner city have carved their niche in this dynamic sport’s culture.
As an activist I asked him about run-ins with police; how adults can help, etc. since this sport takes place in the central business district or ” the CBD ” in localese.

I quickly realized Patrick has the calm delivery of a presidential spokes person.
We talked about the stereotypes they defeat ( i.e. ” Black boys don’t skateboard! ” ) and the money-making potential if some of these kids go pro one day.

While our topic was skate boarding broader topics therein were liberty; individuality and all these other lofty topics Black boys, alongside peers everywhere should explore.

When I see them zooming down the sidewalk, doing things that would likely injure lesser beings, it tells me the inner city hasn’t been beaten, not yet.

Not with great men like Patrick on the scene.
Happy Go Skateboarding Day!!!!!!!

*** This post isn’t a racial thing by the way, it’s a celebration of the freedom and creative expression that comes from healthy individualism.

In the real world, no man can outrace a bullet. No woman commands storms with her mind. No one spins webs from his wrists or flies across continents or shoots lasers from his eyes. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t super heroes among us. Inside every human is the capacity to do something kind, brave, and strong for our fellow humans; some among us simply choose to do so in secret. In the spirit of the heroes who fill the pages of comic books, an unlikely assortment of men and women have been donning masks and costumes, and venturing into their respective neighborhoods to feed the hungry, comfort the sick, and protect the innocent.
The Real Life Super Hero Project is the photographer Peter Tangen’s attempt to document the work of these loosely affiliated individuals; it’s also a gallery exhibit designed to raise money for the causes with which these men and women are affiliated. Highlighting the people who do good under the secrecy of masks with no hope for personal gain, the Real Life Super Hero Project is a call for all of us to engage with and help those around us.
“Celebrate and honor them,” says Tangen. “And find the hero in all of us.”

SQUEEGEEHALLOWEEN!

Squeegeemanasamildmanneredreporter1SQUEEGEE-GREETINGS SQUEEGEE-FANS!!! I JUST WANTED TO GIVE YOU BRIEF UPDATE ON ONE OF MY FAVORITE HOLIDAYS! TODAY, IF YOU DIDN’T KNOW, IS HALLOWEEN. I WAS A MILD MANNERED REPORTER THIS YEAR. I SQUEEGEE-PATROLLED SEVERAL BUSY AREAS OF THE CITY IN COSTUME- INCLUDING THE HALLOWEEN PARADE FROM SOHO TO CHELSEA. THERE WASN’T REALLY ANY CRIME, BUT THERE WAS A TON OF GRIME. I SPENT A LITTLE WHILE CLEANING SECTIONS OF THE PARADE ROUTE. AFTER I HAD CLEANED A FEW BLOCKS, I NOTICED IT WAS DIFFICULT TO FIND A RECEPTACLE, AND THE LITTER SEEMED TO BE NON-STOP, SO I GAVE UP THAT PURSUIT. THE CITY WILL HAVE EVERYTHING CLEANED UP BY MORNING ANYWAY. THAT WAS SQUEEGEE-MUCH IT TO MY NIGHT. MORE VIDEO BLOGS COMING SOON. UNTIL NEXT SQUEEGEE-TIME, SQUEEGEE-LATER.
