Zimmer Barnes' Apollo Solar Panel Generator Arm Band

About This Project:
This project started with a tragedy: while crossing the street, I was clipped by a car’s sideview mirror and my arm was broken. While wearing a plastic, futuristic looking arm brace at a technology conference, many of the other attendees had ideas for tech I could rig up to it for added functionality. Among some blinking red LEDs, a class IIIA laser and an iPhone dock, was my original armband solar generator.
While out wearing the generator, which I named Apollo, out at New York Comic Con, I had many people asking me if I was selling it. The more friends I talked to, the more excitement I saw in having something like this available. I started to see how valuable it would be to have hours of extra energy for mobile devices with you as long as the sun shined. I worked to design a new Apollo, one that would be simple, aesthetically pleasing, light-weight and could be mass produced.
With the new third generation Apollo, that vision is complete. However, I can’t mass produce a large amount of them on my own steam. If you’ve ever wanted an easy way to DOUBLE THE BATTERY LIFE for your iPhone, iPad, Android phone or tablet, this is it. If there’s 25 or more people committed to that reality, I can get these Apollos shipping out by next month. Let’s make it happen!
Voltaic Systems, the company that manufactures the solar panel and battery for my project, have been very helpful in the pursuit of this goal. I use their 2 Watt, 6 Volt Panel, which retails for $25, as well as their USB Battery V11, which retails for $40.
While the solar panel is rugged, I further protect it with a quarter inch layer of clear acrylic sheet, which is laser cut to exactly fit the size and shape of the panel. Costs for the material and laser cutting is roughly $4.38 per acrylic shield.
Additional costs include black Velcro strips, black nylon strapping with plastic buckles, a black cotton armband and some type of super glue. I’ve found Loctite All Temperature Repair Extreme to be the strongest and clearest of glues sampled. Altogether these materials amount to roughly $5.50 per unit.
Tea Krulos has also featured Zimmer’s device on his blog: http://heroesinthenight.blogspot.com/2012/05/zimmer-takes-apollo-armband-to.html

It's the 20th already!?? Anyway "I'm back"

Good old SBC tech support. No phone, no internet, but I’m “back in business” (internet-wise). I got the impression from a few messages I got that some folks thought thier “friendly neighborhood stupor-hero” (dubbed by a buddy of mine who remembers my past non-stop drunken adventures) was farther away than I really was.
Maybe my INTERNET went away for a while, but The Windy City sure as hell didn’t…and neither did I >:) Bein that I have never owned a cell-phone in my life, but bein hooked on the internet for the last 10 years, it’s crazy to see how much regular social networking has changed. I had begun to take for granted how much I depend on the ‘net. Funny huh?
Somethin to think about when you’re organizing w/ your comrades.
Respect.

Outline On Pepper Spray

What is Pepper Spray?

Pepper spray is a nonlethal aerosol spray made with the pepper derivative oleorsein capiscum (or OC). It is used to cause temporary blindness and incapacitate an attacker. You should only use pepper spray if you are threatened or your life is in danger. It is a crime to use pepper spray to commit malicious acts.

A steady burst of 3-5 seconds will turn almost any attacker, no matter how “tough”, into a blind crybaby, and allow you to either escape, or take control of the situation. Some brands of pepper spray will also leave an invisible chemical on the attacker which will help the Police identify them.
Before you buy a container of Pepper Spray, always look at the expiration date. You will need to buy a new can when it expires. Most brands last for about 2 years.

How does pepper spray work?

Pepper spray is an inflammatory agent. When the spray comes into contact with mucous membranes (eyes, nose, throat and lungs), it causes immediate dilation of the capillaries. Temporary blindness and instant inflammation of the nose, throat and lungs will occur immediately after the spray comes into contact with the mucous membranes. The attacker will experience difficulty breathing, coughing, choking, sneezing, severe burning sensations to the eyes, nose, throat and skin, and nausea.
The inflammation will last anywhere from 15 minutes to approximately one hour.

Is Pepper Spray Legal?

Pepper spray is legal in all 50 States in the U.S. However, possession and/or use may be regulated or prohibited by law in some jurisdictions including your city or town. If you are not 100% sure that pepper spray is legal to use and carry in your locale, check with your local Police department.

Where is Pepper Spray Prohibited?

You cannot carry pepper spray on board a commercial aircraft. If you do, you can be charged with a Federal Crime and a $25,000 dollar fine. You may not be allowed to carry pepper spray into Federal buildings and State buildings, if in doubt…leave it at home.

Various Pepper Spray State Restrictions:
NEW YORK – New York residents may only purchase defense sprays from licensed Firearms Dealers or licensed Pharmacists in that state.
MASSACHUSETTS – Massachusetts residents may only purchase defense sprays from licensed Firearms Dealers in that state.
MICHIGAN – Pepper Spray can be no stronger then a 2% concentration of OC (see top of this article).
WISCONSIN – Pepper Spray can be no stronger then a 10% concentration of OC. Can must be between 15-60 grams only. The bottle must also have a “safety” which locks into place.
