Questions to the Real Life Superhero Community

Hello Superheroes,
Okay- so my question is: If what you do and who you are is something you’re proud of, why is it a big secret? Why are you hiding your identity if you’re not ashamed? If what you’re doing is charity work, or to benefit people in need, why is it being kept a secret? It seems like people in the “community” are out of touch with reality- you’re not ashamed of the work itself but the lifestyle you’re living that accompanies it because subconsciously you’re aware that you’re too engrossed in a make-believe persona. Friends and family would accept charity work, but they wouldn’t accept delusional behavior- is THAT why you’re ashamed to tell them about it? If it was as simple as “I’m doing charity work tonight.” you should be able to tell friends and family. Men dress as Santa Claus in shopping malls every year, people dress as clowns regularly for birthday parties, etc, and they don’t hide it from their family- so why are YOU hiding it?
Sincerely,
Echo

I am a real life super hero too. I do the same things that you do like give blood, feed the homeless, etc. but I do have a difference, I do actually “fight” crime. I go look for it, I stop it in action, and kick the crap out of anyone who commits it. I guess the question I have is why do you guys wear masks if you have no reason to conceal your identity? If you do good things like that then let people know that it is actual people doing these good things, not someone behind a mask. you guys are doing the right thing and I do stand behind you. I am looking for more people like me, I wish more people were to think like me and just put an end to the complacency and do something!

Entropy's Forgotten Factor

A conversation between Big Simon and Tiny Terror on doing good
Big Simon: Tiny Terror… I’m callin’ you out!
You’re fond of pointing out how we’re fighting a losing battle, how the notions behind the theory of entropy describe a situation in which we are little more than hindrances to a certain outcome. I’d like to take a moment to point out a flaw in that idea.
Entropy is the measure of increased disorder in a closed or isolated system. In a system with no change in variables, chaos is the rule. The common example is that you cannot put the ingredients for a cake mix into a bowl, seal it shut, and expect it to make itself into a cake. Order doesn’t come from nothingnesss – in fact, it’s just the opposite. With no outside force working on those ingredients, the liquids will soak unevenly into the powders, and eventually you’ll just have a big, gloppy mess.
On that point, I think we agree. But that’s as far as your theory seems to go.
What it’s missing is that there is an outside force. Us. People doing good things. I don’t care if you call them “Real Life Superheroes”, “Costumed Activists”, “Crimefighters”, or “Good Samaritans”, these people are the ones who mix up the cake mix, who slide it into the oven and bake the cake, who take it out and frost it, then serve it up to the rest of the world. This force, this human force, doesn’t just consist of people in this movement; it consists of everyone who believes doing good things is right; it’s made up of uncorrupted cops, daring firefighters, brave soldiers, caring nurses, precise doctors, teachers who challenge their students, and students who take their challenge. It’s made up of next-door neighbors, complete strangers, open-source programmers, faithful missionaries, honest politicians (as rare as they might be), lawful judges, and courageous public defenders. It’s the essence of the most positive side of human nature, and it’s real and alive.
The world is a better place than it was two hundred years ago. It’s more complex, not less so. It’s more ordered, not less so. We have better communication and a more widespread understanding and acceptance of our differences. No, we’re not perfect, but we’re closer than we’ve ever been in all of history.
We may never reach that perfect utopia, but we aren’t getting worse, because we’re not a closed, isolated system.
All it takes is a little hope, and a little more action.
Tiny Terror: Don’t head off to Ponderosa just yet, Big Simon. After all, it’s open ’til 10 PM at the very least and although you might miss the lunch buffet, you certainly won’t miss dinner.
Just in case no one gets the joke, Ponderosa is an all-you-can-eat buffet in Pennsylvania.
Ha.
Anywho, I’m aware of my flaw in arguing on behalf of entropy; a flaw I’ve ignored up until this point because no one else seems to be capable of pointing out the fact that we do not exist in a closed-system…Where entropy doesn’t have to be the norm. I can admit that things have gotten a heck of a lot more civilized since our days as mammoth-hunting neanderthals and I can also admit that things have become better regarding levels of violent crime and hate crimes and all of that.
How interesting, however, is it that you’ve gone and proven that the RLSH’s existence is one that is fleeting?
Things are better, A LOT better, than they ever were in the past even if they could stand to make continued leaps forward. And this is a trend that has carried on regardless of you folks doing what you do. The world becoming better does not weigh upon your shoulders so much as it weighs upon everyone and I think the general consensus is that things have not become worse.
And as far as our caring for fellow man goes, it continues to get better.
Innately, we’re driven to sadism and altruism…Although that other side of us exists, we seem to be suppressing it quite well in favor of treating one another with more generosity and kindness than we have displayed in the past.
Yes, I was wrong and flawed in my arguments for entropy. Congratulations on being the first person to either look it up or recognize the flaw first-hand. However, noting the world continues to get better and has continued to get better, showing a trend, does sort of dispute the RLSH’s existence. Why have such a movement if things are getting better?
Big Simon: Just because things are generally getting better doesn’t mean there are pockets and places that couldn’t use a helping hand. We get better, on the whole, because people are inspired by the actions of others. Scientists become scientists because somewhere along the line a teacher really grabbed their interest. Firemen become firemen usually because something – or someone – in their lives convinced them of the need to save, or the raw goodness of saving, lives. Same with paramedics and EMS workers. We may not all stand on the shoulders of giants, but most of us have been given a leg up by someone who provided a catalyst for change, a challenge to be better.
No, the RLSH movement isn’t necessary. But you’re right at one point: It is fleeting. This moment, this tiny chronological span, is the only time it would work. The American entertainment industry has created for us (and the world!) a new mythology, an distinctly American mythology. Superheroes have gone mainstream, due to big-budget films like Iron Man, Spider-Man, and The Dark Knight, and it’s created an environment in which people who wish to stand up for their communities can take on the semblance of the inspirations they had long before the new mythos became a public phenomenon. I won’t say everyone in the movement was inspired by comic books, but a large number, even the majority were, and if they want to do their good deeds dressed like those fictional characters who instilled in them at a young age the desire to to right, now is the perfect time to do so.
But we live in a thirty-second society. We like our McDonald’s. We like our news served up in soundbites and flashes of pre-edited video. We like our short speeches and catchphrases. Nothing holds our attention for long, and the RLSH movement will be the same. It’s fleeting because in twenty years we’ll have stepped it up. Maybe we’ll move to a whole different mythology. Maybe people will see the need to do this sort of thing all the time, and there won’t be a purpose to do it with a costume and a mask. Maybe they just won’t care anymore.
Yes, the RLSH movement is fleeting, in the grand scheme of things. But people inspiring others is not, and that is what is going to be the legacy of the movement, if it’s done right. That is what will be remembered.
Tiny Terror: Mm, fair enough.
Not much I can say in regards to this, save for the fact that I hope you’re right. I hope inspiration is the legacy of the movement.
On the other hand, its legacy could be one of crazy, if not civil-minded people that liked to play dress-up. Make sure that people remember what you were fighting for, not who was fighting.
Other than that, curse you Big Simon, for pointing out the flaws in my argument.
I’ll be back, hasta la vista, foiled again, and all of that other, villainous jazz.

i master legend have uncovered another scam to take advantage of poor people.here it is . as you know everyone is being told they will need a converter box to be able to get the regular tv channels or your out of luck.i being an observer and helper to the needy knows that many old people and young too have only a beat up tv set with rabbit ear antennae.the 40.00 dollar unit they want you to buy can really cut into people on a fixed income but fear not i have found a way to destroy there evil plan.just by chance and i being a fan of Mcguyver skills tried an experiment.
a number of test were being done to see if i would get the blue screen so i hooked up an old vcr and used it to change channels and then to my theory i did not get a blue screen and still got a picture all three times i tried it. so there you go friends all you need is an old vcr and your set .
also if you don’t have one, you can get them for about five dollars at the local thrift store. so spread the word and help out some people down on there luck. by the way radio stations have not allowed me to give out this info …hhmmmmm… whats with that? i smell an evil plan that will not stop just here.

Actually, might I suggest that this is a two-fold conspiracy?
First, you get people addicted to stupid programming, and make them complacent sheep.
However, you make such programming in such a way that not only are they sheep and willing to buy whatever you tell them, they are also addicted to the programming itself.
Hence, they then start charging for the new converter boxes. Addicts, wanting their cable TV, thus pay to keep themselves ignorant sheep and keep themselves addicted to everything else.
In short, you make them your docile slave, but make it enticing and addictive enough that they are willing to do anything in order to stay your slave. Plus, it winds up being yet another way to make money off of them in the process.
By the power of thought, I am the Mystic Avenger, Champion of Reason and Paratime Angel Extraordinaire!

My point is that once broadcast television is no longer transmitted in analogue (on Feb 17), the analogue receiver in a VCR will not work any better than an analogue receiver in a television.

You have to test it on or after Feb 17th. Testing it now makes no sense at all.

He’s correct ml. It has to be tried On the 17th. We are going thru a huge build out right now trying to be ready.
I have heard that there is a bill to pay for those boxes
Go to dtvan.com I think and you can get a $40 coupon and get a free box. Also tell anybody who is concerned to do the same

Sorry ML – I worked telecom for several years. This is one of the best pieces of legislation to slip through CONgress in decades (no clue as to how THAT happened! ). See: http://www.dtv.gov/consumercorner.html#faq2
Unless the “Galactic Slate-Wiper Of DOOOOOOOM ©” erases us all in 2012 – or civilization collapses beforehand – we are becoming ever-more dependent on cell phones, dedicated emergency band radios and broadband internet access.
The switch to digital frees all the analog bands for a huge number of uses, but mostly for the above three reasons:
* Have you ever had a cell phone drop a call when you are within sight of the tower?
Blame analog TV: in most areas, heavy cell traffic dumps you if it overloads the cellular network – and it doesn’t even have to be the tower closest to you, it could be one close to the person you’re calling, or even one somewhere in the middle.
* Same thing with the police/fire/medical dispatch bands – I have listened in panic as 15 units from four different departments tried to talk over each other about five separate incidents, simultaneously.
People die on a daily basis because of that.
* Last is broadband access. Since my mother was killed in a car wreck in 2007, my father has virtually become a hermit in the lake house – he has church and his bridge game, but that’s it. He is desperately lonely, and since he lives a three-hour drive from me, going to see him is not an everyday thing.
He would do a lot better if he had internet access, but he can barely get a cell signal where he lives – I don’t think there’s a DSLAM within 10 miles of his house. Cable is worse. FiOS might as well be on Mars.
Municipalities and county governments can’t provide broadband wireless internet access for free because the infrastructure is privately owned, and running your own wire is more expensive than anyone here wants to think about.
But! — forcing analog to go digital means that all those signals crowding the low bands can now be accessed using the old analog infrastructure….soooo, local governments will be able to run broadband to the citizenry under preexisting rules governing public-access cable and TV channels…
…Getting a computer to everyone, OTOH…..But, one thing at a time.
The government knew about this waaay in advance – that’s why, as Superhero said – the government is providing a voucher for a free converter box to anyone who asks for one.
Other than the one-time charge for a converter – for those who actually want to spend money on one – those channels are still free…..And $40 one-time is a damned-sight cheaper than $40/month+ for cable/satellite/FiOS…

Well, there is a slim possibility that your VCR has a digital tuner, but most do not. So, if it does and your VCR trick works for you, it doesn’t mean any old VCR will work the same way. If your VCR does not have a digital tuner, then there was something else wrong with the experiment. Either on your end, or that of the station conducting it.
In any case, using a VCR (without a digital tuner) will not work on Feb 17th. By telling people to go out and buy one, you are going to look rather foolish.

The FCC and their ilk have always fascinated me, so this has me curious. Master Legend sir, I am curious about something. First, though, I’ll point out my bias…
I don’t like television because I don’t like the adverts or bad writing. Lately, there’s been some decent writing, but I still can’t stand the ads. At most, I’ll put up with hulu.com ‘s 15 second interruptions, but I never turn on a TV anymore and don’t have a cable TV signal (though I do get cable internet at home). We even watch movies on the laptop or on the desktop in “My Geek Cave”.
Anyway, the reasons for the switch to digital which Librarian defined above are quite accurate and demonstrative of the legislative motive. That’s not to say there aren’t some nasty side effects, but he’s got the info proper there. Most full-power stations are broadcasting both digital and analog now, in preparation for the switch. I know a couple stations have mentioned that
At the same time, I think I see what you are trying to say, ML, but I’m not certain I understand the situation you describe. Help me out, let me know if I have this right.
You’re saying one of your local stations was running pre-conversion test signals which included a digital tv broadcast. You attempted to tune in the digital broadcast through a standard (non-HD) television and VCR unit, and were able to receive the HD signal fine. Is this correct?
Let me ask this while I’m at it. Do you have a cable signal which you ran through the VCR/TV when you conducted this test? If so, you would easily have been able to see the signal, because it’s coming via cable, not antennae. Cable and satellite TV subscribers with analog TVs hooked up to their cable or satellite service should not be affected by the February 17, 2009 cut-off date for full-power analog broadcasting. The signal is channeled through the cable hookup — only the “rabbit ear” folks have anything to concern themselves with in this regard.
Also, just FYI, those coupons are still available, but there’s a waiting list to get them (what is this, a bread line?) — limited to 2 coupons per address, worth $40 each, just pre-request them here: http://www.ntia.doc.gov/dtvcoupon/ [ Also, this site has some useful info and links: http://www.soundfeelings.com/free/converter_boxes.htm ]
On that end, ML, you may want to talk to those people you know about getting them signed up for coupons (you could take them to the library to use those computers I’d think), and always request two per household if you can (so that they can pass on un-needed coupons to others in need). There are articles I found online talking about church groups helping to redistribute unneeded coupons as well.
For everyone here, I’m paraphrasing an article here:
Quote :
About 20 million Americans rely on over-the-air broadcasts for their television service, and another 15 million have at least one antenna TV in their homes, according to the National Association of Broadcasters. Dallas and Los Angeles alone, there are 1 million over-the-air households, according to the Consumers Union.
Beginning on Sept. 8, the FCC conducted a DTV test in the Wilmington, N.C., market. Within five days of the moment that local broadcasters switched off their analog signals, the FCC received close to 2,000 telephone complaints, about half related to antenna issues or converter box installation.
There’s two ways to look at that number. FCC Chairman Kevin Martin called the test a success, noting that less than 1 percent of Wilmington’s 400,000 customers had problems. On the other hand, only 14,000 households in Wilmington were using antennae in the first place. One in seven of them had complaints.
That’s just a single example of many wherein MAJOR US cities had serious DTV Converter problems, to say nothing of the rural areas where “rabbit-ear” people are far more likely, and cable or other such services are too difficult or too costly to run.
There are people out there testing the converters in various locations and finding a lot of problems, largely to do with proper device hookup, the television wiring, general electronic issues. There are also a lot of environmental issues which give converter-users the short end of the stick; simple junk, too, like their proximity to high-power transformers, where they happen to live on a hill, silly crap like that.
My feeling is that while I’m not concerned about my own reception or converting at all, having no interest in television broadcasts themselves, I’m very concerned about the idea that a nation bred on the 2-second attention span and whipped into consumerist frenzies, will suddenly find themselves lacking in their simple TV pleasures (nearly everyone in the industry admits that the vast majority of “rabbit ear” households are woefully unprepared or uninformed about this conversion). I don’t know about you, but I’m taking the 18th off. I don’t want to be wandering the streets in this country the day 15 million televisions become really fancy paper weights.
Personally, I’m interested in how to make your own HD converter box — so far I can’t find anyone with info on this, but I’m incredibly curious. I bet there are some geeks out there right now trying to determine how to make the converter out of $5 (US) in Radio Shack bits and some empty beer cans, hee hee.
Of course, the cheapest, easiest solution (which just may improve you as a person) is to say “fuck television” and hit the library or book store for some good books.

Meh…I’ll maybe watch T.V. once every few days just to see what’s going on with the news. I can’t remember the last time I just flipped channels; I can’t stand the sheer ‘do nothingness’ of watching television.
Though, I’m not looking forward to everyone being pissed because they can’t watch Lost that Wednesday.
(because of course, they won’t have figured out that you can just watch it on ABC.com and skip all the commercials.)

Mm, I think the scam aspect is that the industry is milking consumers pretty well in the whole conversion. I don’t think the idea was meant toward that end (I honestly think the available bandwidth it will release for emergency usage really was the major motivator in beginning the legislation), I think it’s just sheer opportunism.
Retailers are focusing on people who come in for the converters, “upselling” them to actual HD sets. The average cost of a new HDTV is about $800 (average, I say — don’t forget how many higher-end HDTVs are wide-screen, flat panel), even though the technology has been understood and in production for well over 5 years. There’s been very little drop in price for HDTVs for no better reason than they’re waiting for the swarm of people to come shopping in the weeks following the switch.
People seeking converters, upsell to the low-end sets at around $450 to $700. People having converter problems, refund and upsell to that or better.
It’s a fairly losing situation if your below the mean poverty line (or in an institution) and want the ability to just watch the damn news again.

oh, no, ml. this is a rather good topic, thanks for bringing it up. I think some sort of awareness drive for the fact that the free vouchers even exist would be in our best interests. Everyone knows they need to convert, but not everyone knows that the government is willing to help with that, especially people in low income areas. They’re not exactly advertising this fact. And hell, the idea that some vcrs do convert to a digital feed? I was unaware of that, myself.
I think your idea is right on the money. We should figure out what all can be done to convert to digital without spending 50 bucks a tv set just for a converter, and educate the masses. It’s a noble cause.

***Name Edited Out***,
YOU are taking MySpace too seriously, NOT me.
I’m busy with my Superheroic activity (which is everything but a “delusion” – actually, I’m currently going out, in the streets, doing the “dirty job”).
1- Me and Tothian are friends as much as me and Zetaman used to be friends. I DO NOT delete people because Tothian told me to do so… I do whatever I choose to do, above laws, conventions, perspectives. It’s about instinct and… BALANCE. I do whatever I want, baby.
Tothian is just a collegue – I know his dark spots and good aspects. I can say the same for Zeta, less or more.
So much for the history.
It was Zetaman to delete me from his friends list, and I added him again… because I consider him as being one of the best collegues out of there. End of the story.
2- The HERO LINKS fiasco happened because I didn’t like the management of that MySpace profile page. A female troll attacked Master Legend, and HERO LINKS was going to be “used” as well.
STILL, it’s just a MySpace profile page. Who cares.
3- FEMALE anatomy is the only thing I know beyond Superheroics. I could make a bad joke on you, EASILY, but I’m way too “gentleman” to do so. Rejoice.
I failed to recognize you because I mentioned my three collegues… you’re just an host, and NOT a Real Life Superhero yet (I didn’t say “Superheroine” for a reason, take care).
People usually hate you. I cannot blame them, my kitty.

I delete you for reasons known to me, very real reasons. You are a sell-out,Entomo. You delete other people too, whenever you get the idea that you should. You delete people from Hero Links. So that’s the pot calling the kettle black, is it not? You take myspace too seriously, you do everything a certain person tells you to because you fear losing the superficial relationships you believe that you have formed.
Why would I accept you as a friend when you are not even capable of recognizing me as a host of the Alternates Radio Show? I am the host, Entomo. ‘Zeta, Zero, and Null’, as you call them, are my friends and co-hosts. I guess I am missing a certain part of the male anatomy, and that is the reason you fail to recognize me.
You’re a tool, Entomo. Get bent.

Entomo,
I know she’s not one of us. But think of it as like an unwritten rule that heroes and villains do not expose each other’s real names. And if they do, they’re wrong.

REALLY? What a disappointment.
Tothian… Tothian… Tothian… you talk tough.
Apocalypse Meow attacked me because I’m Tothian’s friend. She’s an enemy. If ‘HEROES NETWORK’ will keep supporting her, I’d forced to stop my affiliation with this place and Tothian himself.
I’m not joking.

Antithesis, my friend,
I’ve always been serious. “DEEDS, NOT WORDS”, forever. I just thought networking activity would have expanded the movement, thus giving people a choice… giving world an hope. I was partially wrong.
It’s just a silly MySpace profile page, I pretty much know that.
I’ve been patrolling in the streets, FOR REAL. That’s what really matters to me.
I’m now realizing there are a lot of opportunistic people among Superheroes… my so-called “collegues”.
No more “Mr. Community”. Time to do it by myself.

I’ve never doubted that you were serious or real. All I’m saying is that if you want to make a change, just make it. I don’t like it when (and I’m guilty of this myself) people post about how they’re going to make a difference and start getting more serious and then nothing happens. Keep up the deeds-not-words and you’ll be an inspiration to all of us.

Entomo,
What do you mean by being done? I thought by being done you weren’t going to deal with that stuff anymore?
There are things that we all should know-
– In the heart of a hero, there is no room for hatred for people who do wrong. Only hatred for the wrong people do. Show forgiveness where it is asked for, when honestly asked for.
– There is no time for internet flame wars. Only time to save the world.
– None of us can save the world alone. We can only do it together, united. That’s one of the many reasons I formed the Heroes Network.
– I hate having to take sides with people. I am open to being friends with anyone. But I won’t give up being who I am or doing what I do just to satisy anyone.
– I know exactly who hates me, even the people who think I don’t know. And… I don’t care. Hatred is their flaw. Loyalty is my strength.
– If someone’s actions are truly unjust, and in the wrong, then it would be appropriate to stand against them.

If we’re supposed to be a squad of some sort, then we must act as TRUE teammates. I’m a natural born leader and pretty much know the rules of the game. If the enemy hits one of my soldiers, I backfire and kick his ass.
That’s my way.
Tothian, I don’t “hate” you, nor I “hate” Zetaman. I still consider you as being friends of mine.
I’m accustomed to disappointment when coming to people.
My whole point is: the RLSH community has turned its back on me. That’s how I feel. There’s no more respect.
BUT…
… I don’t need the community to be a Real Life Superhero. I just need myself.

Entomo,
I apologize if I did anything to offend or disappoint you. I had no idea it meant that much to you.
But still, we can’t go around not doing things just to worry about what others will think.
This community has not turned it’s back on you. I’m still your friend and colleague, and I would take a bullet for you anytime. Just don’t let stupid, unimportant little things bother you. They don’t matter.
Where-as we don’t need a community to operate and be RLSH’s, we need them for other things. And it’s good to know we’re not alone in doing this – that there’s others out there like us – who we can look forward to teaming up with.

Don’t worry about un-important stuff. You keep saying you’re not worried about all this, and just want to save the world, but you’re complaining about it.
Send Superhero a friend request, he’ll accept you, then comment each other.

entomo, this is the internet. some of us have lives outside of it. sounds like you do too. don’t take it as an insult. be a friendly as possible. a person simply cannot make everyone love them. use these sites for what they were designed for: social networking.
no more. & no less, colleague.
i may have called their show, but that does not at all make you and i (or tothian or master legend, for that matter) any less of a friend to you. if you have a minor quarrel regarding a friend request with some other person, that doesn’t automatically make those people OUR enemy.
and to continue to bash people for something as inconsequential to actual hero-ing as myspace comments or top 10 friends, that will only serve to drive more animosity between you and others who your share a mutual respect.
think about it, friend. surely you can see this internet bickering nonsense is below you.

This coming from the guy who does more Google vanity searches than anyone else in the community?

THIS is why I said “if you’re going to make a change, just DO IT.” Because if you sit around preaching, THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS!!! I don’t know what other bug crawled up your ass, Entomo, but all you’re doing is casting blame on peoplr who’ve done ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG.
WTF is all this about? You’re angry because we won’t go stick up for you against Apocalypse Meow on Zetaman’s show? Go fight your own battles.
You know why nobody is doing that? Because nobody cares about her. We all got over her a LONG time ago. You’re letting your anger get the best of you and it’s apparently driving you insane. Nobody’s banding together with Apoc Meow, we’re just not giving her the satisfaction of caring a shred about her.
And I have to agree with Nostrum, You’ve definitely had your share of supervain moments, but if you’re implying that you’re going to make a change now, then I repeat:
JUST FUCKING DO IT!

Entomo Interview by Kevlex

12/01/2008 Entomo Interview
Kevlex: How did you become aware of the RLS movement?
Entomo: In 2003, I became alert because Terrifica and Mr.. Silent. Something was going to happen, it was in the air. So I started my training, unaware of the making of a new “wave” of Superheroes which was occurring underground, at least in America.
I had already acknowledged the existence of Super Barrio Gomez in the early Nineties, however.
Kevlex: What is your motivation for becoming a RLS?
Entomo: I am what I am. Since day one, long time before I would don a Battle suit, I’ve always worked to achieve equilibrium between the various factions struggling on the chessboard of reality. I was going to become what I already was from the start.
There’s no other “logic” to argue. I was just following the path that Nature had arranged for me. I’m doing that right now, in this moment. It’s my destiny.
Kevlex: What do you hope to accomplish as a RLS?
Entomo: Everything. I’m an Agent of Balance. I fight for a FAIRER world.
Kevlex: Do you have any special skills or training that helps with your RLS activities?
Entomo: Training, yes. It’s still an on-going process, because you never reach a point where you don’t really need to train anymore. That would be ridiculous.
I practice athletics, bodybuilding and Krav Maga.
As far as my morphic faculties are concerned, you can apprehend them here: www.entomo.wikispaces.com
Kevlex: What do you usually do while in your RLS persona?
Entomo: A vast array of tasks. I do whatever I choose to do. That’s my ethics. I’m stuck between Order and Chaos, and move from one pole to another.
Basically, I’m a a detective and a patroller but, believe me, I can turn into a man of action quite easily.
Kevlex: What is the most significant thing you have accomplished as a RLS?
Entomo: Can’t really determine that. It’s up to people to define my legacy. I would say that, in the end, I will be regarded as a symbol of total justice and dangerous freedom.
I saved lives, I helped a lot of people and… I did it for free. Not a bad accomplishment, isn’t it?
Kevlex: What is the theme or concept behind your RLS costume and name?
Entomo: I own paranormal faculties related to insects – that being said, “paranormal” is a word open to various interpretations. Think of me as a post-modern shaman, whose faculties are connected to a parallel plane of consciousness.
Kevlex: What equipment do you use in your RLS personna?
Entomo: I’m in the process to adopt a self-customized Tazer; in Italy, we call that “Dissuasore elettrico”. It will be a totally-new version, since I’m gonna do some serious modifications.. That would be the stinging Tail of the Insect-Man.
Kevlex: Which RLS’s do you take the most seriously?
Entomo: Everyone I can sense as being “the real deal”. Thanks to my Parallelogram ability, it’s not that hard. Just to name few: Captain Ozone, Superhero, Tothian, Geist, Master Legend, Amazonia, Captain Prospect, Nostrum, Knight Owl, Squeegeeman (sometimes).
Kevlex: What do you feel are the greatest challenges facing the RLS community?
Entomo: Inspiration, expansion and popular acceptance.
Kevlex: Considering the many different philosophies that RLS’s operate under, do you think there will ever be one unifying organization for the RLS movement?
Entomo: We don’t need that. I don’t need that, at least. I work for nobody.
Kevlex: What would you do if you had great resources, such as Bruce Wayne does in the batman comics?
Entomo: Can’t answer. Secret matter.
Kevlex: How do you feel the media portrays the RLS community?
Entomo: Mixed bag, but that’s life..
Kevlex: What has been the reaction of the public, your family, friends, and law enforcement to your RLS persona?
Entomo: Not many know I’m Entomo, just thirteen people: they are useful allies.
In regard to the rest of your list, I don’t care about law enforcement. I bet I could be perceived by some of them as an “anarchist”… and they are dead right, I’m just that. An anarchist Superhero.
Casual people appear puzzled. But you must shock in order to shake.
Kevlex: What advice do you have for people thinking of becoming RLS’s?
Entomo: Find your inner avatar, the “Superhero” you keep locked inside. Then, materialize him as a “second skin” you must dwell in. Embody what you truly are. End of the story.
I inject justice.

Superhero Saturday: Entomo the Insect-Man
This is my life. I can’t permit other lives, people who chose different paths, to interfere with my path. We’re connected, but still independent. It’s a delicate game of balances. Welcome to human existence.
– Entomo the Insect-Man
This is the beginning of the first ever regular feature here at Gnack Attack. Every Saturday I will be adding an interview with a real life superhero. If you’re already confused, you should catch up by reading my initial superhero post. I have approached a number of real life superheroes for interviews and due to time zone differences, among other variables, the style of each interview will likely be slightly different. Some interviews will be done in the style of a questionaire through email. Some will be done in a more true-to-form interview style through chat software. This, my first superhero interview, was conducted by email.
The first superhero to be interviewed is Entomo the Insect-Man. To find out more about Entomo, you can visit his MySpace page. Before I get straight into the interview I’d like to express my gratitude to Entomo for agreeing to this interview. His answers were concise, sincere and well-thought out. So thank you Entomo! And now, without further ado…
First things first, lets talk pseudonyms. Your superhero name is Entomo the Insect-Man. Tell us a bit about why you chose this name.
The name has born in my mind about 4 years ago. Now that I think about it, it was in the middle of 2003. I was studying anthropology at the time. Well, the name just sprouted from my thoughts, spontaneously. I was trying to define myself, trying to understand more about myself. At the time, I didn’t know anything about the [Real Life Superhero (RLSH)] movement in America, I never even suspected that it existed. I only knew of Super Barrio Gomez in Mexico, and that was about it.
When I first thought about the “Entomo” Superhero name, it was like: “Great. That’s myself, truly. If one day I’d become a Superhero, that will become my nom de guerre. But that day is impossible”. I discarded the idea as soon as it was born in my mind.
Now, that day has come; nothing is impossible.
You have asked that I recognise you as an ecologist/activist/animalist first and foremost. It seems as though you have a very general interest in helping not just humanity, but the world in its entirety. This is something that many people respect but few act on. You have acted – why?
The desire to help the entire world was always with me, since I was a kid. I was just too weak to perform my role as a child. I started to “build-up” my persona and my physique when I turned 18. So it was a gradual process, still on-going. Now I’m strong enough to make the difference if given the chance. It’s something you “sense” as being inside yourself, a mechanism.
Without such incredible mechanism, I couldn’t work.
I could not care that much about humanity as long as our world has been rendered uninhabitable by its inhabitants. I mean, our Earth is a living being. We must treat our world like a person.
The life of a superhero is often shrouded in mystery and secrets. Are you particularly worried about hiding your identity?
No Superhero group at the time, I’m thinking about assembling potential Italian Real Life Superheroes and start one myself. It will take a lot of time, but I don’t care.
My “civilian” identity is just an enhancement of the most human part of myself. Of course, only my girlfriend and some friends (two so far) know about it. They are very supportive. Basically, my “civilian” identity is just an overplaying, but not a mystification. It’s not like Clark and Superman, to draw a parallel with comic books. Clark is a carefully constructed disguise.
My two lives are not separated. I just live twice.
Many superheroes claim to have powers or talents that the general population rarely shares, what about you?
As kid, I didn’t realize the whole thing. I lacked focus, of course. They are not “superpowers” in the strict meaning of the word, but not “ordinary” faculties either. This is Real World, and I’m in the middle.
They are a natural part of me, like breathing or sleeping. I just let them grow in myself as time went on.
Well, if I have to describe what I can do, that’s tricky. It’s like I’m in tune with something greater than me, what I use to call “the spectrum”. Every time I interact with life – and, for instance, nature – something “vibes” in my physique in total harmonical conjunction with the “spectrum”. My insect-like features are just physiological answers to dozen of questions life poses to my body in a day. My faculties are all enlisted here: http://entomo.wikispaces.com.
My “talents”, as you wisely put it, are many. Let’s say I mimic some qualities belonging to the insect world. Sometimes, I am myself amazed at what I can do. My principal weakness is that “I” come and go, in the sense sometimes I’m broken and my faculties seem to have vanished. As an intermittence of some sort.
It seems as though it is standard practice for superheroes to go on patrol looking for crimes to solve or people to help – is this something you also do?
I’ve just debuted. I did some patrols in the past, as a civilian. I’m more a “watcher” than a crimefighter, but I can fight… and very well. Give me a worthwhile opponent. I think the whole purpose of the patrols is adverting police at the right time, and do some of the work by yourself. It’s a collaboration, you know. I’m going to collaborate with police as long as they collaborate with me. It’s a mutual affair.
If you have one chance to tell the entire world one message…
“If you don’t care for this marvellous and unpredictable planet, then you’re not caring for yourself.
All small and big lives are connected to the pivotal life of this globe. All small and big pasts are connected to the pivotal future of this globe.
Don’t act as a parasite… act as a worthwhile life.”
The message speaks for itself.
A lot of people are going to write you off as a crazy guy in a costume.
I don’t care. This is my life. I can’t permit other lives, people who chose different paths, to interfere with my path. We’re connected, but still independent. It’s a delicate game of balances. Welcome to human existence.
I have a mission. The costume is just a part of said mission. An integration.
I have no trouble with wearing my costume in public. Somehow, it’s part of me. It’s the better way to be “exposed”, because I’m actually “exposing” the most important and fascinating part of me.
Every superhero has to have a nemesis, a supervillain counterpart, even if this supervillain is simply crime itself.
I don’t know how to answer to this. I don’t know if, at this point, I “need” an archenemy to focus myself even more… we’ll see. I’m ready to go.
I can only say that an “opposing” counterpart is a natural progression of the resonance we have in the world around us. It’s exponential.
You, like any superhero, have a costume to go with your superhero persona…
My costume is partly green because green is the most incredible manifestation of nature. Even many species of insect show green in their chromatic palette, which is a true miracle. I still wear what I call my “Beta Version Outfit”, or even “First Bite”. It’s a prototype. I’m going to wear a more sophisticated mask and suit in the weeks to come.
My symbol is a stylized capital sigma resembling an hourglass; representative of the summation of insect-like features I incorporate into myself – into my genetic code. An hourglass because it’s time to do something; time needing to be spent doing something to make the present state of the Earth much better than what it is. Additionally, some species of black and brown widows present on their abdomen the shape of an hourglass.
One of the most engaging things about any good superhero is their flaws and weaknesses – their ability to appear so very human to us.
I agree with you. Being a Superhero is just… well, a magnification of human nature. Not a re-arrangement, or a travesty. It’s a magnification of something that is already present in human nature.
I have flaws, but they are part of me. They aren’t “mistakes” to fix, rather natural “losses”. I can deal with them.
Finally, I thank you because you’re an exponent of the bright side of the “new generation” of young people out of there, and I’m honoured to promote my movement among you all.
I inject justice.
Entomo.

Real Life Spider-Man”.
It was a blog I wrote on ANOTHER (possible) Real Life Superhero here in Italy, whose appearance is identical to famed comic book character ‘Spider-Man’.
I’m not ‘Spider-Man’, neither I pretend to be ‘Spider-Man’. He doesn’exist, you know.
And I’m not located in Milan, definitely.
But wait… everything seems good in order to have fun, right? It’s the philosophy behind the new generations.
What are you CREATING? What are you DOING with your life?
This blog. “Hate” is the only thing you know.
We’ll keep up the good work for you anyway.

It took me 5 seconds to find that disrespectful comment. I can sacrifice such an insignificant amount of time, do not worry.
It’s not fun at all. We’re fighting the good cause, not playing to a silly ‘Dungeons and Dragons’ play table (like someone among you suggested) or whatever you call that. We’re not delusional “nerds”, but very balanced and skilled people set to make the difference in the world.
On a side note, I did NOT insult you. When I talked about “ignorance”, I talked about the undeniable fact you were not willing to learn about our movement. Apparently.
Still, I’m learning to not bother much with such (disrespectful or polite) attempts to destabilize and/or “invalidate” our movement.
This is my last post. Good luck with your lives. I wish you the best. If given the chance, I would save your life.
That’s the purpose of my existence. That’s my path. That’s my mission.

In all regards,
Your digging might have been wrong, since nobody in the community I belong to ever considered me as being a “joke”. Said that, I do my patrols, risk my life when given the chance, and I’m also going to do some charity appearances in orphanages as well. It’s just that my debut was in May, I’m relatively “new”.
Now, Bagel. I’m going to submit an article for RATION REALITY. I’ve also offered my MySpace friendship to you all, including your husband. Hope it’s the beginning of a collaboration in order to promote OUR activity. Ok?

Doesn’t really sound like a “promise” written on stone and signed in blood, but more like a “proposal”.
I wrote this message when everything was STILL pretty much contained. Then it went downhill from that point.
I’ve now a point to ponder, and still feel tired because the patrol I did yesterday. That’s what you can call “tribulation”. I call it “routine”.

You’re like a five year old kid who’s just found out that his puppy likes the neighbor’s kid better than him. Seriously, get over yourself.
People aren’t clicking the links to go to your Myspace profile. In the last two days, more people have come to Ration Reality by searching ‘Entomo The Insect Man’ and ‘Entomo Real Superhero’ than have clicked to your site from ours. Hell, more people have come to Ration Reality by Googling ‘hannukah music torrents,’ ‘communal baths – germany,’ ‘naked delivery girl’ and ‘dumpster whores’ than have clicked away from our site to visit your Myspace profile. Bagel’s right – most people don’t read the comments or click the links. I usually don’t read past the first, hell, ten or fifteen comments. Sometimes more, if they’re really funny or interesting.
Write something to present a more balanced view of who and what you are. We will post it with no commentary aside from a brief introduction saying that you’re a guest contributor to the site.
I will advertise your guest article on Technorati and Digg!, just as enthusiastically as I do my own posts, and I will do it in a respectful and polite fashion. This is the best shot you’re going to get, Entomo. People right now are seeing only one side of it. Give them the other side. The feedback emails that we’ve been getting right now have been running pretty heavily towards ‘wow, Superhero is a pretty cool guy, so’s Zeitgeist. That Entomo is a whiner, though. What’s wrong with him?’
You want to stop that from happening? You want to change that? You’ve been acting like a little kid here for the past few days. You want the puppy to like you best again? Smear yourself with bacon grease, write a post here and act like an adult. Do what Mr. President Tothian wants you to do and make your community look ‘badass and cool.’ Right now, except for Superhero, Squeegee, and Zeitgeist, you don’t. Well … maybe Nostrum, too. He seems to be a pretty stand-up guy, but the jury’s still out.

If I had to sum up what a RLSH really is (at least for me), I would have to say that when people ask why we wear costumes and create “alter-egos” to whatever degree we do, it is simply to draw attention in a colorful way to the idea that anyone can be “super”, by virtue of going above and beyond their day-to-day norm to help others. Run-on sentence thusly ends…
That’s really all there is to it.
You don’t need a costume to do what we do. All you need is a genuine desire to help, whenever and wherever you can, in a world that needs it heroes. The hero or heroine…in *everyone*.

‘you don’t need a costume to do what we do’
Ok, so why the need for a costume? I understand uniforms for our military, police, fire fighters- they are earned. As are their titles. What torturous labyrinth are you subjected to before you don your spandex? What oath do you swear by? Nothing against you, Superhero, I admire your work. But it seems that some of your brethren are in it for the glory. The world has its heroes and they don’t wear costumes. Humility and Integrity are manifested in action, they are qualities that need no marketing. Again, Superhero, I have served my country and I appreciate the service that you are doing. It is noble and just. I am simply giving others something to think about.

Eye: Do I have to do what you do to wear the costume? Cuz I like dressing up, but I don’t actually like helping people.
KW: Because it’s freakin hot! No, wait…that’s why girls like yaoi.

When I was 4 years old I watched Mary Poppins. She was my hero.
I grabbed an umbrella , opened it and jumped off the roof and it fucking hurt everywhere.
Then I saw her tiitties in Victor Victoria. That just fucked up everything.

Noble

One of the few Canada-based real life heroes, Noble is a vigilant youth who patrols a large area around Ontario cleaning up the streets, as well as breaking up fights, which sometimes involves entering them. Trained in Goju Ryu martial arts, as well as Dragon Kung Fu, Noble is also an expert acrobat and gymnist, having spent years training as a circus acrobat.
Training and patrolling a regular part of his schedule, Noble stumbled onto the RLSH community while nursing a cold, and has been an active member ever since. Noble’s uniform consists of a black trench coat, black face mask, and black fingerless gloves. He is currently training with a round shield, 30 inches in diameter, to help him gain a defensive edge while maintaining an acrobatic style. Noble hopes to help the Superhero ‘movement’ become ‘mainstream’.

Miss Amazing

Miss Amazing is a masked superhero from the Lowell, Ma area. She has kept a low profile for the last five or so years while working behind the scenes to bring about changes in her city. She patrols mostly at night at different times and has made numerous calls to the police to stop crimes that are in progress.
This coming year she will be taking a more active role in her community and even taking more of a stand by actively stopping crime as it happens herself. She has numerous protective devises that are being added to her uniform and will be out and about even in early evening hours when the most happens with muggings and other trouble that are caused by the youth of her community.

Paragon Prime

Citizen Prime (formerly known as Paragon Prime) is a real-life crime fighter. His identity is guarded but not secret. He first appeared in Phoenix, Arizona in early 2006. Citizen Prime, or Prime, claims no superhuman powers. Prime’s experience and training make him an excellent tactician and creative problem solver. He is practiced in Ninjitsu, Tiajutsu, street fighting and Okinawan Karate. He is well versed in various armor technologies and nonlethal weapons. Prime has an excellent understanding of business, finance and technology.
Prime is a founding member of the non-profit Worldwide Heroes Organization and serves as the Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, among other duties.
Prime’s armor (to be completed in January, 2007) provides Level 2 and Level 3 ballistic, stab and blunt trauma protection to 70% of his body while providing complete flexibility. His armor can contain various non-lethal weapons including 130 db alarms, Pepper Spray, various stun technology devices (including Taser, hand held and pen stun devices built into the armor), the ARMA 100 device, etc.. HIs armor and equipment is in a constant state of refinement. His helmet and armor contain communication devices and recording devices, including voice amplification.
Future planned developments: Night vision, fire proofing and electrifying the outer structure of the armor.
Prime typically patrols in an unmarked car, in disguise, or on foot. His investigations center around local issues such as lost children, local drive by shootings and the like.
As of this writing, his real life investigations and encounters remain sealed for confidentiality.
Prime also hosts a podcast on Prime.Vox.com narrating the journey to become a superhero.
