\nTo become a reliable eye witness, an aspiring field operator should practice developing skills in providing quick, accurate descriptions. When attempting to describe events, vehicles, or persons, write down the details of what you have observed while they are still fresh in your mind, so your descriptions to law enforcement officials will be as accurate as possible.
\nWhen describing events, write down:<\/strong>
\n\u2022 What happened;
\n\u2022 When it happened;
\n\u2022 Where it occurred (note the nearest cross street, home address, or landmark in relationship to the event);
\n\u2022 Whether injuries are involved (Be prepared to report visible or suspected personal injury. Be as specific as possible – this could save a life!);
\n\u2022 Whether weapons are involved (this information, whether observed or suspected, is vital to responding officers).
\nWhen describing vehicles, write down:<\/strong>
\n\u2022 Vehicle license number and state, make and type of vehicle, color, and approximate age;
\n\u2022 Special designs or unusual features, such as vinyl top, mag wheels, body damage, pinstripes, etc.;
\n\u2022 Direction of travel.
\nIn preparing descriptions of persons, it is important to write down the following:<\/strong>
\n\u2022 Sex;
\n\u2022 Race;
\n\u2022 Age;
\n\u2022 Height (estimated from eye contact level measured against your height);
\n\u2022 Weight;
\n\u2022 Hair (color and length);
\n\u2022 Hat;
\n\u2022 Facial Hair (beard\/mustache);
\n\u2022 Shirt\/tie;
\n\u2022 Coat\/jacket;
\n\u2022 Trousers\/pants\/shorts;
\n\u2022 Shoes;
\n\u2022 Any peculiar or distinguishable mannerisms, physical disabilities, dis-figurations, scars or tattoos;
\n\u2022 Voice characteristics;
\n\u2022 Direction of movement.
