DARK KNIGHT RISES MOVIE MASSACRE & COMIC BOOK CULTURE.
Our beloved comic book culture, as fans and for some. superhero theme activists, was used as a back drop to commit mass murder inside an Aurora Colorado movie premier of ” the Dark Knight Rises. “
Americans and world citizens who love this medium should look deeply into unfolding events and resolve to use one of its core values, individual vigilance to enhance public safety, to help people better secure what’s always been society’s soft under belly: theaters; malls; stores, eateries, etc.
Members of what media calls ” the real life superhero ( RLSH ) ” now have a golden opportunity to put aside petty squabbles in the face of a masked assault embodying the worst villainy of fact and fiction. Their use of superhero imagery can assume new seriousness in wake of this tragedy.
The Free World is being tested these days. From domestic crime to foreign terrorism free people are being battered by angry dissidents and worse. Those who enjoy comic books unbridled freedom and the few who even take this to the streets should unite to pump new life into tired appeals about being vigilant in public.
Whether this shooter is a loner or part of a plot our beloved comic book culture nonetheless has preached awareness against sudden evil from its inception. We ( meaning fans and activists ) shouldn’t go spastic and stage embarrassing fan boy pr exercises or misguided vigilantism as clumsy attempts to calm a frightened populace.
Using our beloved comic book culture as fans and activists to creatively high light the need for real life vigilance will be more than enough.
Our fictional heroes and heroines once again have shown us the way.
Whether we use their example to make horrible facts like this movie massacre history remains to be seen.
My thoughts and prayers are with the victims; their families and nations wondering if anywhere is safe anymore?

Right now people are scared and paranoid because of the incident in Colorado. These feelings are very much understandable. One of the more eerie things to think about was the first descriptions that came out about the shooter when it happened. People said they thought he was security or a cop because he was dressed like a person from SWAT.
Here is where the challenge for RLSHs resides.
NO ONE knows someone else’s intentions until their actions define them. Before their actions are performed, all a person has to go with is categorization and judgment. This always begins with physical appearance.
Categorization: to arrange or associate items/objects into classes or groups that one is familiar with
Judgment: the act of making a decision of right or wrong based on set rules, laws, or one’s experiences
When a RLSH dons a costume, they are instantly BRANDING themselves to whatever is associated with their image and their name. While there are a lot of heroes that have chosen to wear bright colors with large logos and bold designs… there are just as many, if not more, that have embraced the ‘Batman/Punisher’ look of darkness, fear, and death… mostly because they think is cool.
Well… IT’S NOT!!
This has NOTHING to do with your Rights or the debate on prejudgment (prejudice) or whatever! This has to do with common sense!! ALL humans categorize something they see first, then develop judgments based upon what they know. THIS IS THE TRUTH!!
If you wear a hoodie in all black with a chrome skull mask, carrying a baton, with a utility belt, and gloves… WHAT IN THE HELL DO YOU THINK PEOPLE ARE GOING TO THINK?!? Take a minute and reverse the thought and imagine seeing someone like that walking around your neighborhood or even approaching you!
Meaning no disrespect, but take Urban Avenger, for example… This is a guy, albeit RLSH, that wears a creepy gas mask with a red hoodies, a costume loaded with items, tools, or weapons of his trade, is arrogant and ‘stand-offish’ in his speech and obsessed with his image as a hero as well as those that he perceives as ‘NOT’ heroes. Look at the name he chose… ‘URBAN AVENGER’.
First-things-first… let’s be honest. What are gas masks associated with in life, science fiction, and the real world?
It is a tool to help filter corrupted air surrounding an individual. In science fiction it is often the face of the mind controlled enemy, the masses of expendable troops serving a warlord of some sort, something used to hide a sickly face, etc. In real life, it is worn by the police just before firing tear gas into crowds of protestors as well as associated with the WORST kind of war possible, which is gas warfare.
This is merely the surface images that are created by his mask.
Look at his name, Urban Avenger, which translates to: one who brings requital, retribution, and/or revenge to a city or community. HOW IN THE HECK ARE WE SUPPOSED TO EMBRACE THIS?!?
Humans naturally fear the unknown… now think about this, we don’t even know his identity. He has NO accountability… or responsibility. While he may have his own code of honor and action, he is NOT within the boundaries of ANY established rules, because he can always escape, change identities, or even retire. This, of course, does not mean that he WOULD do this, I am using this as an example.
Many RLSHs BELIEVE that they would take the higher ground until darkness comes to their doorstep, which is often the test. As an example, take the one superhero who admitted killing the guy in the park overseas that was attacking a girl. As a RLSH… WHY didn’t he turn himself in to prove his innocence or take responsibility?
Instead, he was logged in from the United States and simply filled with regret.
This does not mean that all RLSHs are like this, it is meant to open the floor to honest debate.
Urban Avenger, as well as many other RLSHs, has proven himself time-and-time again as a true hero, but this does not exclude him/them from healthy discussions that should be revisited constantly in order to evolve the craft of ‘heroing’.
I want t take the time to make sure that is understood that this is NOT a personal attack on Urban Avenger, I merely used him as an example in context to the RLSH community because he is well-known. What I wrote about him was intended to give EACH and EVERY member topics to internalize and to explore about themselves and the path that they have chosen.
BRANDING is a part of that craft.
I am a Marine. I am associated with many of the stereotypes that come with being a Marine. This I embrace. When I wore my uniform and walked into an area, region, or room I was treated as a Marine whether good or bad.
The same goes for RLSHs.
